Further to the Riviera kid, I think that clubs are entitled to entetrain offers for a player (provided that they are above board). When they say every player has a price, it is true, but it is the selling club that knows what it is. If we are Arsenal and have, I dunno, Van Persie, on our books, we might well decide to sell him for 30 mil because Wenger knows some teenager at Marseilles who will be just as good for 5 million. If you’re Villa with Benteke on our books, we might knock back offers for 40 mil, partly because we know what a find we got, and that we can’t replace him for that much with anyone (van Persie won’t leave Man Utd for Villa no matter how much we offer). But if someone offers 50 million and we can get a striker, a DM cand a CB for that much who will lift our standard, then we might agree to it, even though the striker isn’t as good. It’s the club’s perrogative to sell, and based on past performance, I trust Lerner to hold out for a good price if it comes to that.I appreciate though, as fans, we might think that the club has made a completely shocking decision so I’m not saying we should agree with the sale of Benteke. I pray he doesn’t go; if he does, I hope we get good value for him so we can keep strengthening our team. But if we don’t have a replacement plan, then I agree it will be a waste of money.
